Interesting Plays and Situations

Play: A1 is fouled by B1 and then A1 pushes B1. A1 is assessed a technical foul. After Team B  shoots the two shots for the technical foul the table notifies the officials that Team A was in the Bonus. What is the Proper procedure to follow.
Ans. Have team A shoot the 1-1 with noone lined up on the lane and then Team B will get the ball at the division line opposite the table as a result of the technical foul.

Casebook Play8.7 Situation B ans: " The penalties should have been administered in the order in which the fouls occured. However, since all merited free throws were attempted it does not constitute a correctable error situation"

AREAS OF CONCERN AND QUESTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN ASKED

CORRECTABLE ERRORS: Remember that the correctable errors have to do with : Awarding unmerited free throws; Not awarding merited free throws; Free throws at the wrong basket; Free throws by the wrong player and erroneously awarding or canceling a score.

TIME FRAME TO CORRECT: You must correct before the first live ball following the first dead ball after the clock has started. Example; A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and the shot goes in. Team B calls a time out and after the time out team B takes the ball out, but A1 was entitled to one shot. Team B brings the ball up the court and scores. The error must be corrected before Team A gets the ball out of bounds. Ball became live when Team B had the ball out of bounds when they took it out, then the clock started and the ball became dead when Team B scored – CORRECT NOW.  If Team A gets the ball out of bounds this would be the first live ball following the first dead ball after the clock starts- TOO LATE.   REVIEW CORRECTABLE ERRORS  RULE 2-10.

ODD PLAY THAT HAPPENED—NOT A CORRECTABLE ERROR SITUATION
OFFICIALS PROVIDE ERRONEOUS INFORMATION Case Book Play 8.6.1
A1 IS ABOUT TO ATTEMPT THE FIRST OF A ONE-AND ONE FREE-THROW SITUATION. The administering official steps in and erroneously informs players that two shots will be taken. A1’s first attempt is unsuccessful. The missed shot is rebounded by: (a) B1, with all other players motionless in anticipation of another throw; (b) A2, with all other players motionless in anticipation of another throw, or (c) B2, with several players from both teams attempting to secure the rebound. The officials recognize their error at this point. RULING: In (a) and (b), the official’s error clearly put one team at a disadvantage (players stood motionless and didn’t attempt to rebound). Play should be blown dead immediately and resumed using the alternating-possession procedure. In (c), both teams made an attempt to rebound despite the official’s error and had an equal opportunity to gain possession of the rebound. Play should continue. If in (a) the shooting team rebounded and made the rebound you would disallow the goal.

FREE THROW LANE SPACES: Remember that we can have four defensive and two offensive players in the lane spaces. The first lane space must be occupied by opponents of the free thrower, the second by teammates and the third space by opponents. No one can occupy the fourth lane space. Should the teammates of the shooter not occupy one or both of their spaces the defense may occupy them, but they may not have more than four players. If the violation is discovered when the shooter has the ball and there is a violation by the offense penalize immediately. If the violation is by the defense you indicate with a fist out to the side. If you have a violation by the defense and the offense calls a time out before the shot is taken—the violation still stands when the player comes to the line after the time-out.

TAKE YOUR TIME AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND THEY ARE IN THE CORRECT LANE SPACES. YOU HAVE UP UNTIL THE SHOOTER CATCHES THE BALL THROWN BY THE OFFICIAL TO MAKE ANY CORRECTIONS.
